News: An airport redevelopment project is in progress to accommodate a likely increase in traffic during the Football World Cup, scheduled for 2010. The project includes a new central terminal building (CTB) to link the domestic and international terminals; expansion of parking capacity; Terminal A departures upgrade (TADU) and a train station.
Terminal Transfers: Golf carts and shuttle buses ferry passengers between international and domestic terminals, and terminals and parking lots. Every 6 minute a shuttle bus transports passengers between remote parking garage and terminals. A walkway also connects Terminal A and B.
Directions: The airport is located east of Johannesburg in Gauteng Province.
Distances from major towns and cities follow:
Boksburg-5 Miles Johannesburg-16 Miles Soweto-25 Miles Pretoria -30 Miles
But time to reach the airport may vary as roads serving it also connect to key industrial areas; thus traffic could be heavy especially during peak hours. Just opposite Terminal B, a multi-storey parking lot has two floors: one for car-rentals and other for coaches and buses. Metered taxis and minibus shuttles, for which booking can be done at baggage-claim area, are available near the terminal. From Pretoria, R21 would take you to the airport and if coming from Johannesburg, R24 also goes to the airport. Both the routes are well signposted.
Airport Parking: The multi-storey parkade has more than 5,000 parking bays, including bays for disabled passengers. The parkade charges R191.00 per day and R13.00 for an hour. Executive Carport, an authorized agent for valet parking at ORTIA, offers economical parking packages. One day package costs R 160.00 and monthly package costs R 2,850.00. If vehicles are left unattended in drop-off zones, outside the domestic and international arrival terminals, vehicle owners would be fined. You can use “Pick up and go” parking facility, just across the international arrivals terminal, which is free for the first five minutes. And all parking lots at the airport are free for a quarter of an hour. Super South Gate Low Cost Parking, connected to the terminals via a shuttle bus service, costs R40.00 for twenty-four hours.
At The Airport: Each terminal of O. R. Tambo International Airport is divided in two levels: top level for departures and bottom level for arrivals. Banking and Money Exchange: ATMs are installed at the level 1 in shopping concourse of the domestic terminal. The public concourse also has foreign exchange facilities and its Mezzanine level offers banking services.
Food and Beverage: Both Terminal A and B have an array of restaurants and cafes.
Shopping: A Duty-free retail mall is in the domestic terminal Other Services: The domestic terminal has a business support facility, conference centre. There are two Airport Online outlets for Internet connectivity and one outlet is located in International Terminal. Wireless Internet can be accessed in all dining and shopping areas using wireless cards and laptops. The holding lounge, international departure and arrival areas and the public concourse feature telephone service outlets. Porters in navy-blue and bright orange uniforms with ACSA permits are at your service. They can be tipped R5 per bag. A Muslim prayer area and a chapel on the airport welcome all passengers. A 24-hr medical clinic offers services of an ophthalmologist, dentist, doctor and physiotherapist.
Disabled Facilities: Special toilets, wheelchairs, ram ps and lifts are designed for the convenience of disabled.
Departure Tax: There is no departure tax.
